Hiking & Trekking, flexible and customizable.

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is the least traveled path on the mountain, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and a quieter experience. Although it requires a long drive to the starting point, climbers are rewarded with fantastic views and the rare chance to hike without crowds. Unlike other routes, Rongai ascends through remote wilderness areas, offering unique perspectives of Kilimanjaro’s rugged northern slopes. Trekkers often encounter wildlife and enjoy pristine scenery that few others experience. Because of park regulations, however, all Rongai ascents must descend via the Marangu Route, the most popular and well-used trail. The Rongai Route is considered moderately challenging, with a gradual ascent that makes it suitable for climbers of varying fitness levels. Its combination of quiet trails, diverse landscapes, and authentic wilderness atmosphere makes it a favorite for those who want to avoid the busier southern approaches like the Machame Route or Lemosho Route.

Day Day 2
Rongai Gate to Rongai Cave

Rongai Gate to Rongai Cave

The day begins with a drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate for permits and registration. From there, a short transfer takes you to the Rongai Gate trailhead, located on Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes near the Kenyan border.

The trek starts gently, winding through fertile farmland dotted with corn and potato fields before entering the lush rainforest. This section of the trail is alive with wildlife, and trekkers often spot the striking black-and-white colobus monkey leaping through the treetops. The gradual climb makes for a comfortable introduction to the mountain, with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.

By mid-afternoon, you arrive at Rongai Cave Camp (9,300 ft), where tents are pitched and dinner is served. The quiet atmosphere of this route offers a peaceful start to the Rongai Route, far from the crowds of the southern approaches.

Day Day 3
Rongai Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Rongai Cave to Kikelewa Camp

After breakfast at Rongai Cave Camp, the trek continues steadily upward. The trail leaves the rainforest behind and enters the moorland zone, where vegetation shifts to hardy grasses, giant heathers, and scattered lobelias. The air grows cooler and thinner, and the views open up dramatically across Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. Midway through the hike, you pass Second Cave, a common lunch stop and acclimatization point. From here, the trail becomes steeper as you ascend toward Kikelewa Camp (11,811 ft). The camp is set in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant groundsels, offering a unique and otherworldly landscape. Dinner is served at camp, and trekkers enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote section of the Rongai Route. The day provides excellent acclimatization and sets the stage for the higher altitudes ahead, with stunning views of Mawenzi Peak rising sharply to the east.

Day Day 4
Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

After breakfast at Kikelewa Camp, the trail climbs steeply up a grassy slope, offering wide-open views of the wilderness. The hike is shorter today but more demanding, as you leave the heath zone behind and enter the stark alpine desert. The landscape changes dramatically, with sparse vegetation and rugged terrain that feels almost lunar.

By midday, you arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (14,160 ft), nestled beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. This dramatic setting is one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro, with towering cliffs and a small tarn (mountain lake) adding to the atmosphere.

The remainder of the day is spent resting, acclimatizing, or exploring the area. Many trekkers take short walks around the camp to enjoy the scenery and photograph the striking contrasts of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. Dinner is served at camp, and the evening is spent preparing for the next stage of the Rongai Route journey.

Day Day 5
Mawenzi Tarn Acclimatization Day

Mawenzi Tarn Acclimatization Day

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, giving trekkers a better chance of success on summit night. After breakfast at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you set out on a short but steep hike up Mawenzi Ridge (14,400 ft). The trail offers spectacular views across the alpine desert, with dramatic perspectives of both Mawenzi’s jagged spires and the massive dome of Kibo in the distance.

The unique landscape here is stark and otherworldly, with barren volcanic rock and sparse vegetation creating a lunar-like atmosphere. After spending time exploring and enjoying the scenery, you descend back to Mawenzi Tarn Camp for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

The remainder of the day can be spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the higher altitudes ahead. Dinner is served at camp, and trekkers enjoy a peaceful evening beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. This acclimatization day is a vital part of the Rongai Route, helping climbers adjust to the altitude before the push toward Kibo Hut and the summit.

Day Day 6
Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

After breakfast at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, the trek continues westward across the stark alpine desert. The trail traverses the wide, barren saddle that connects the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak with the massive dome of Kibo. This section of the climb is exposed and feels almost lunar, with little vegetation and vast open views stretching in every direction.

The hike is gradual but demanding due to the altitude, and trekkers are advised to move slowly and watch for signs of altitude sickness. By mid-afternoon, you arrive at Kibo Hut (15,430 ft), a simple stone structure that serves as the base camp for the summit push. Facilities here are basic, with dormitory-style bunks and no running water.

Dinner is served early, and climbers rest in preparation for the midnight departure toward Uhuru Peak. This stage of the Rongai Route is critical for acclimatization and sets the stage for the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.

Day Day 7
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak

The most challenging and rewarding day of the climb begins just before midnight. After a light breakfast at Kibo Hut, climbers set out into the freezing darkness for the summit attempt. The trail is steep and relentless, with icy winds and thin air testing endurance and determination.

By dawn, trekkers reach Gilman’s Point (18,640 ft) on the crater rim, greeted by breathtaking views of the crater and a sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. From here, the final two-hour push leads to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is a moment of triumph — a reward for days of effort and perseverance.

After celebrating briefly at the peak, the descent begins. Climbers return to Kibo Hut to collect belongings and rest before crossing the saddle once more to Horombo Hut (12,205 ft). The long descent is demanding, but the relief of lower altitude and the promise of a hot meal make it worthwhile. Dinner is served at Horombo Hut, followed by a well-earned night’s sleep after conquering the Rongai Route and Africa’s highest summit.

Day Day 8
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, trekkers begin the final descent down Kilimanjaro. The trail retraces the path through heathland and lush rainforest, with a stop at Mandara Hut for lunch. The descent is long but steady, covering 18 km before reaching the Marangu Gate.

At the gate, climbers officially sign out and receive their summit certificates — green for those who reached Gilman’s Point (18,640 ft) or Stella Point (18,885 ft), and gold for those who stood at Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft). This moment marks the successful completion of the climb and is often celebrated with group photos and heartfelt congratulations.

From Marangu Gate, transport awaits to return climbers to Moshi, where a hot shower, a hearty meal, and a comfortable bed provide well-deserved relief after eight days on the mountain. Tips for guides and porters are highly recommended and can be given at the hotel, a gesture of appreciation for their invaluable support throughout the trek.

This final day closes the adventure along the Rongai Route — a journey of endurance, solitude, and achievement, crowned by the unforgettable experience of standing atop Africa’s highest peak.

Day Day 7
