Hiking & Trekking, flexible and customizable.

The Rongai Route offers a unique and less crowded approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning on the mountain’s northern side near the Kenyan border. It is the only route that starts from this remote region, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and a quieter experience compared to the busier southern trails. Although reaching the trailhead requires a long drive, climbers are rewarded with spectacular views and the rare chance to feel like they have the mountain almost to themselves.

Unlike the Marangu Route, the Rongai trek is a camping adventure, with nights spent in tents under the stars, adding to the sense of wilderness exploration. The ascent is gradual, offering a good acclimatization profile, and the scenery ranges from open plains and forests to alpine desert landscapes. One important feature of this route is that all climbers must descend via the Marangu Route, which provides a contrasting experience of Kilimanjaro’s most popular trail.

The Rongai Route is perfect for those who value peaceful trails, authentic camping, and diverse scenery, while still enjoying a manageable climb to the summit of Africa’s highest peak.

Moshi to Rongai Gate, trek to 1st Cave Camp

After breakfast at your Hotel, you’ll meet your guides and porters, check equipment, and set off for the northern side of Kilimanjaro. The drive takes you to the charming wooden village of Nale Moru, the starting point of the Rongai Route. From here, the trail begins gently, winding through crop fields before entering a tranquil pine forest.\

The hike covers about 8 km over 3–4 hours, gradually ascending from 1,950 m to 2,600 m. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as the striking Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey, known for its long white tail and acrobatic leaps. As the forest thins, the path opens into the moorland zone, offering sweeping views across the Kenyan plains.

By late afternoon, you arrive at 1st Cave Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain. Here, tents are set up for a night under the stars, surrounded by the quiet beauty of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes.

Day Day 3 – 1
st Cave Camp to 2nd Cave Camp

st Cave Camp to 2nd Cave Camp

From 1st Cave Camp (2,600 m), the trail continues with a steady ascent through the moorland zone, covering about 4 km in 3–4 hours. The morning hike rewards you with superb views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields shimmering on the crater rim. After lunch, the route leaves the main trail and follows a smaller path across the open moorland, heading toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.

By late afternoon, you reach the 2nd Cave Campsite (3,450 m), nestled in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves (3,600 m). This scenic campsite offers dramatic landscapes and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for acclimatization and rest. Dinner is served here, followed by an overnight stay in tents under the starry skies of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes.

Day Day 4 – 2
nd Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

nd Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

From 2nd Cave Camp (3,450 m), the trail climbs steeply up grassy slopes, covering about 7 km in 4–5 hours. The ascent is short but rewarding, offering superb panoramic views and a strong sense of wilderness as you leave most vegetation behind. The path leads directly toward the jagged spires of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest peak, creating a dramatic backdrop throughout the hike.

By midday, you reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m), spectacularly situated in a cirque beneath Mawenzi’s towering cliffs. This campsite is one of the most scenic on the mountain, with its alpine setting and clear tarn reflecting the rugged peaks above. The afternoon is free for rest or short explorations around the area, aiding in acclimatization before the push toward higher altitudes. Dinner and overnight are spent at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, surrounded by breathtaking views.

Day Day 5
Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Camp

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Camp

From Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m), the trail heads west across the stark expanse of the Saddle, a high-altitude desert stretching between the volcanic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape here is barren and lunar-like, with little vegetation and wide horizons that emphasize the scale of Kilimanjaro. The hike covers about 9 km in 4–5 hours, gradually ascending to Kibo Camp (4,750 m), located at the base of the Kibo crater wall.

Upon arrival, tents are set up and the remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, climbers retire to their tents for a few hours of sleep before the midnight wake-up call that begins the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day Day 6
Summit Day Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak, descent to Horombo Hut

Summit Day Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak, descent to Horombo Hut

The most challenging and rewarding day begins at midnight with a light breakfast before setting out from Kibo Camp (4,750 m). In the freezing arctic conditions, you ascend slowly in the dark, covering steep ground toward Gilman’s Point (5,685 m), reached around sunrise. Here, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the crater rim and the glowing horizon over Mawenzi Peak.

From Gilman’s Point, the trail continues along the crater rim for another two hours, leading to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa. Standing at the summit, you’ll savor panoramic views across the plains below and celebrate the incredible achievement of reaching the “Roof of Africa.”

After a brief time at the summit, the descent begins back to Kibo Camp, where you collect your belongings before crossing the Saddle once more to reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m). The day covers about 16 km in total, taking 15+ hours of trekking. By evening, you’ll enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest, reflecting on the extraordinary accomplishment of summiting Kilimanjaro.

Day Day 7
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Your final descent begins from Horombo Hut (3,720 m), retracing the trail through the heath and lush rainforest zones. The trek covers about 20 km in 5–7 hours, mostly downhill, offering a chance to enjoy the vibrant greenery, birdlife, and the satisfaction of completing your Kilimanjaro adventure.

By early afternoon, you arrive at Marangu Gate (1,950 m), where you officially check out of the park and receive your summit certificates—a proud recognition of your achievement in reaching Uhuru Peak. At the gate, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi, where you can relax at your hotel, enjoy a hot shower, and celebrate the successful completion of your Rongai Route climb.

Day Day 8
Moshi To Kilimanjaro Airport
