The most demanding and rewarding day of the trek begins just after midnight at Kibo Hut (15,430 ft). In the freezing arctic conditions, you ascend slowly in the dark, covering 6 km (4 miles) over 6–8 hours. This section is both mentally and physically challenging, with strong winds and extreme cold testing your endurance. Frequent short breaks help you conserve energy as you climb steadily toward Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft), where you are greeted by a spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi Peak—a sight that many climbers describe as unforgettable.
From Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater rim until finally reaching Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa. Standing at the summit, you’ll savor breathtaking views across the plains below and celebrate the incredible achievement of reaching the “Roof of Africa.”
After a brief time at the summit, the descent begins. You retrace your steps down to Horombo Hut (12,205 ft), covering approximately 16 km (10 miles) in 4–5 hours. By evening, you’ll enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned night of rest, reflecting on the journey and accomplishment.
