The Marangu Route, famously known as the Coca-Cola Route, is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike other routes, Marangu offers dormitory-style hut accommodations instead of camping, with bunk beds at Mandara Hut and Kibo Hut (60 each), and Horombo Hut (120). Climbers are provided with mattresses and pillows, though sleeping bags are required. The huts feature communal dining halls and basic washrooms — ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long-drop toilets and bucket water at Kibo Hut.

Favored by many for its gradual slope and direct path, Marangu is often considered the easiest route up Kilimanjaro. However, its shorter itinerary makes acclimatization more challenging, resulting in a lower summit success rate compared to longer routes. The ascent and descent follow the same trail, making it less scenic than alternatives like the Machame Route or Lemosho Route, yet it remains one of the most popular due to its comfort and accessibility

Day By Day

Your Safari Story, One Day At A Time

Day Day 1
Arrival in Moshi

Arrival in Moshi

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi offers the perfect base to rest, prepare your gear, and soak in the anticipation of the climb ahead. Overnight stay is on a bed and breakfast basis, ensuring you’re refreshed and ready for the trek.

Day Day 2
Moshi to Mandara Hut via Marangu Gate

Moshi to Mandara Hut via Marangu Gate

After breakfast in Moshi, a 45-minute drive takes you to the Marangu Gate, the official starting point of the Coca-Cola Route. Here, climbers’ complete registration and park formalities before beginning the trek. The trail immediately immerses you in Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest, where towering trees, exotic bird calls, and rich biodiversity create a magical atmosphere.

The hike ascends gradually along a winding path, with a stop halfway for lunch. A short detour to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) rewards trekkers with sweeping views of northern Tanzania and even Kenya on clear days. By late afternoon, you arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700 m), where dormitory-style accommodations with mattresses and pillows await. Bathrooms here feature running water, adding comfort to your first night on the mountain. Dinner is served in the communal dining hall, and trekkers settle in for rest before the next stage of the Marangu Route journey.

Day Day 3
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, the trek continues upward, leaving the lush rainforest behind and entering Kilimanjaro’s heathland zone. The vegetation changes dramatically, with small shrubs and hardy plants replacing the dense forest canopy. The trail ascends steadily, offering wide-open views and a refreshing sense of space.

Midway through the hike, you pause for lunch before pressing on toward Horombo Hut. Along the way, the jagged peak of Mawenzi rises sharply to the east, creating a stunning backdrop. From Horombo Hut (3,720 m), climbers are treated to their first clear views of Kibo’s summit, the ultimate destination.

Horombo Hut is larger than Mandara, with dormitory-style accommodations, mattresses, pillows, and bathrooms with running water. Dinner is served in the communal dining hall, and trekkers settle in for the night, acclimatizing to the higher altitude and preparing for the next stage of the Marangu Route journey.

Day Day 4
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, trekkers set out on the long ascent toward Kibo Hut. Early risers are rewarded with spectacular sunrise views over the mountain, a perfect way to begin the day. The first half of the hike traverses the upper heathland, where vegetation becomes sparse, and hardy shrubs cling to the volcanic soil.

As the trail progresses, climbers enter the vast saddle — a barren alpine desert stretching between the jagged peak of Mawenzi and the massive dome of Kibo. This stark, lunar-like landscape is both awe-inspiring and challenging, with thin air and exposure to the elements testing endurance.

By late afternoon, trekkers arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700 m), a simple stone structure that serves as the base camp for the summit push. Unlike the lower huts, there is no running water here, and facilities are basic. Dinner is served in the communal hall, and climbers rest early, preparing mentally and physically for the midnight departure toward Uhuru Peak. This stage of the Marangu Route is critical for acclimatization and sets the stage for the most demanding day of the climb.

Day Day 5
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Horombo Hut

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Horombo Hut

The most demanding and rewarding day of the climb begins around midnight. After a light breakfast at Kibo Hut, climbers set out into the freezing darkness for the summit attempt. The trail is steep and relentless, with icy winds and thin air testing both mental and physical endurance.

By dawn, trekkers reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, greeted by breathtaking views of the crater and a sunrise over Mawenzi Peak — one of the most unforgettable sights on Kilimanjaro. From here, the final two-hour push leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit is a moment of triumph, celebrated with photos and memories that last a lifetime.

After a brief stay at the peak, the descent begins. Climbers return to Kibo Hut to collect belongings and rest briefly before crossing the saddle once more to Horombo Hut (3,720 m). The long descent is tough on the knees, but the relief of lower altitude and the promise of a hot meal make it worthwhile. Dinner is served at Horombo Hut, followed by a well-earned night’s sleep after conquering the Marangu Route and Africa’s highest summit.

Day Day 6
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Return to Moshi

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, trekkers begin the long descent down Kilimanjaro. The trail retraces the path through heathland and lush rainforest, with a stop at Mandara Hut for lunch. The descent is steady but lengthy, covering 18 km before reaching the Marangu Gate. At the gate, climbers officially sign out and receive their summit certificates — green for those who reached Stella Point (5,685 m) and gold for those who stood at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). This moment marks the successful completion of the climb and is often celebrated with group photos and heartfelt congratulations. From Marangu Gate, the journey continues to Mweka Village, where transport awaits to return climbers to your hotel in Moshi. Here, a hot shower, a hearty meal, and a comfortable bed provide well-deserved relief after six days on the mountain. Tips for guides and porters are highly recommended and can be given at the hotel, a gesture of appreciation for their invaluable support throughout the trek. This final day closes the adventure along the Marangu Route, a journey of endurance, camaraderie, and achievement, crowned by the unforgettable experience of standing atop Africa’s highest peak.
