The trail first meets the junction with the Mweka Trail, then continues upward across rocky ridges until reaching Barafu Hut, the final base before the summit push. By this stage, climbers have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s peak from multiple angles. At Barafu, the twin summits of Mawenzi and Kibo dominate the horizon, creating an inspiring backdrop as you rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare mentally and physically for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the summit, the descent begins — first back to Barafu for a short rest, then continuing down to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft) through alpine desert and heath zones. The final descent begins at Mweka Camp (10,065 ft) and winds down through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (5,380 ft). Covering 10 km (6 miles) in 3–4 hours, this section is often wet and muddy, adding a last adventurous challenge to the trek. At the gate, climbers proudly collect their official summit certificates, marking the achievement of reaching Africa’s highest peak. The journey continues for about an hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle awaits to transfer you back to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
