The Machame Route, often called the Whisky Route, is one of the most popular and scenic approaches to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning with steep forest trails, trekkers ascend through lush montane zones to gain a ridge that leads into the moorlands and the expansive Shira Plateau. The route then traverses beneath the dramatic Southern Icefields, joining the Barafu Route for the final push to the summit of Uhuru Peak.

Accommodation throughout the trek is in tents, pitched by porters, with trekkers required to bring a warm sleeping bag, layered clothing, and walking poles. The climb is steep and physically demanding, but achievable for fit individuals accustomed to mountain trekking. An optional extra day can be added for acclimatization on the Shira Plateau, while strong groups may choose to omit camping at Karanga Camp. The descent follows the Mweka Route, offering a direct way down through forested slopes.

Day By Day

Your Safari Story, One Day At A Time

Day Day 1
KILIMANJARO AIRPORT - MOSHI

KILIMANJARO AIRPORT - MOSHI

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be met by your trekking team and transferred to Moshi town, the base for Kilimanjaro expeditions. Accommodation is arranged at Springlands Hotel or a similar property, on a bed-and-breakfast basis. This first day is designed for rest and preparation—giving you time to check your gear, acclimatize to the altitude, and receive a briefing about the climb ahead. Overnight in Moshi ensures you’re refreshed and ready to begin the trek the following morning.

Day Day 2
MOSHI TO MACHAME CAMP (3,010M)

MOSHI TO MACHAME CAMP (3,010M)

The adventure begins with an early breakfast and a short drive from Moshi town to the Machame Gate at 1,800m, where registration and park formalities are completed before starting the trek. The trail ascends steadily through lush rainforest, alive with colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and towering trees, but rain can make the path muddy and slippery, adding to the challenge. Lunch packs are provided at the gate, and bottled water carried from Moshi keeps trekkers hydrated along the way. By late afternoon, after covering 11 km in about 6 hours, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp at 3,010m, where porters prepare tents, hot water for washing, and a warm dinner. Night temperatures here can already drop close to freezing, making this first camp a true introduction to the mountain’s high-altitude environment.

Day Day 3
MACHAME CAMP | SHIRA CAMP

MACHAME CAMP | SHIRA CAMP

You rise early at Machame Camp (3,010m) and begin with a steady climb for about an hour to reach the top of the forest. The trail then eases into a gentler gradient, winding for two hours through the moorland zone, where the vegetation shifts to heathers and volcanic rock. After a short lunch and rest, the trek continues up a rocky ridge onto the expansive Shira Plateau. From here, stunning views open up to the east, showcasing the Western Breach and its dramatic glaciers. Positioned due west of Kibo, the route leads to Shira Camp at 3,840m, where porters prepare drinking and washing water before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp is colder than the previous one, with temperatures dropping well below freezing, offering a true high-altitude experience.

Day Day 4
SHIRA CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP VIA LAVA TOWER

SHIRA CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP VIA LAVA TOWER

The trail turns east into a semi-desert, rocky landscape leading toward the dramatic Lava Tower. After about 5 hours of trekking, you reach an altitude of 4,630m, where lunch is served in a designated area. This is considered the toughest day so far, and many climbers may begin to feel the effects of altitude, including breathlessness, irritability, or headaches. Following lunch, the route descends nearly 680m to the Barranco Camp, a 2-hour trek that highlights the acclimatization benefits of climbing high and sleeping low. Along the way, there are excellent opportunities to photograph the Western Breach and the imposing Breach Wall. Nestled in a valley below the Great Barranco Wall, the camp offers a memorable sunset before dinner and overnight stay, with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

Day Day 5
BARRANCO CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

BARRANCO CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

The trek continues from Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m), covering 11 km in about 7–8 hours. The trail is exposed to strong mountain winds, and tents are pitched on a narrow, stony ridge, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the terrain before nightfall. From here, the summit lies just 1,345m above, and preparations for the final ascent begin. Climbers are advised to ready their equipment, trekking poles, and thermal clothing, replace headlamp and camera batteries, and carry water in thermal flasks to prevent freezing. Dinner is served early, and trekkers go to bed around 19:00 hrs, aiming for 5 hours of rest before the midnight summit push. This night at Barafu Camp is both challenging and exhilarating, marking the threshold to the ultimate climb uhuru Peak.

Day Day 6
BARAFU CAMP - SUMMIT - MWEKA CAMP

BARAFU CAMP - SUMMIT - MWEKA CAMP

You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This 6-hour walk to Stella point is for many climbers, mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5685m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak. The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life. The walk back to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day Day 7
MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI VIA MWEKA GATE

MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI VIA MWEKA GATE

The final descent begins after breakfast at Mweka Camp (3,090m). The trail leads down through dense forest to the Mweka Gate (1,650m), covering about 10 km in 4–5 hours. The path is often muddy, making this last stretch a long but rewarding walk. From Mweka village, you’ll be driven back to Springlands Hotel in Moshi, where a hot lunch and a well-deserved shower await. Overnight accommodation is provided at the hotel. This is also the moment for celebration, as successful climbers receive their official summit certificates: green certificates for those who reached Stella Point (5,685m) and gold certificates for those who stood at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Tips for guides and porters are highly appreciated at the end of the trek, marking the conclusion of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure..

Day Day 8
MOSHI TO KILIMANJARO AIRPORT

MOSHI TO KILIMANJARO AIRPORT

On Day 8, after an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight back home. This marks the conclusion of your unforgettable Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb.
